Public outcry has been widely reported. The City’s position includes that it has an obligation to get the best return for ratepayers on the land owned by The City. Others feel that there is perhaps a stronger obligation to the community by providing facilities and encouraging healthy activity. It has also been asked that other towns and cities support facilities including Beatty Park.
Should The City consider reducing the rent to reflect previous levels? Please let us know your thoughts.
Tourism and extended trading hours – 1STOP’s previous polls strong support for Subiaco to become an official’ tourism precinct along with Perth CBD and Fremantle. The Premier has recently stated that he will look at extending trading hours as part of his re-election platform.

Ace Cinemas in Subi is likely to close as it has been reported that the new land owner can obtain a better return by building offices. The community has spoken out with a 1STOP poll showing overwhelming support for ‘retaining cinemas in Subi’. Subi’s Pavilion Markets are closing at the end of the month and the Station Street Markets have been reduced significantly. This has resulted in protests as it is seen as a loss of the village issue as well as reducing the diversity of Subi’s retail offer. However, it is a commercial reality that Subi’s markets are cannot provide an adequate return for land owners, and that if markets are to stay they will have to be underwritten in some fashion by the City – either as the landlord or by providing concessions to property owners or developers.
Would you like the City actively participate in finding a way to retain what is left and encourage more markets? Please let us know your thoughts.
